I am often asked what makes the Australian cricket team so good. Well, in my view there are a number of factors which contribute to its success. Firstly, it has a group of very talented players who have great pride in playing for their country every time they are asked to do so. At the same time, they are a group of people who are highly motivated to be the best they can possibly be; that is, each player is never satisfied with today's performance – he wants to do better tomorrow.

As a team then, they are constantly seeking ways to improve results by understanding how these results are achieved and combine this knowledge with any 'cutting edge' methods that can be utilized to enhance overall performance.

Leadership plays an important part in the ongoing process of winning. In recent times, the team has had outstanding captains such as Mark Taylor and Stephen Rodger Waugh. This tradition is continuing with the appointment of Ricky Ponting. However, beyond the formal captaincy roles, leadership is a key value within the group. The team culture is such that it allows, and probably demands, that each person display leadership in delivering skills on field as well as personal leadership off the playing arena.

And while there are many other factors which produce the outcomes that are achieved by the Australian cricket team, I should mention the 'never say die attitude' of this team. It does not believe in being beaten, even when faced with the most improbable situations. While it does not mean they will win every game, this attitude contributes significantly to the winning ways of the team, and is a huge hurdle that opposition teams constantly confront.
